Found a list of Trade Unions associated with Leeds and the surrounding areas. I dont believe any of them exist anymore, some were probably amalgamated with the bigger unions. Though I have to say after being a trade union member for 38 years I have never heard of any of them, and most seem to be long forgotten trades and skills. Does anyone else know of them?Leeds Amalgamated Association of Builders' Labourers Leeds Amalgamated Jewish Tailors, Machinists and Pressers Trade Union of Great Britain Leeds Amalgamated Leather Shavers Society Leeds and District Association of Tin-plate Workers Leeds and District Farriers Protection Society Leeds and District Power Loom Overlookers (Mutual Improvement) Society Leeds and District Power Loom Overlookers Society Leeds and District Scribbling Overlookers Association Leeds and District Society of Coopers Leeds and District Trade and Friendly Society of Sheet Metal Workers Leeds and District United Tanners Society Leeds and District Warp Dressers. Twisters and Kindred Trades Association Leeds and District Willeyers and Fettlers Union Leeds and Huddersfield Federated Cloth Pressers Society Leeds and Morley Power Loom Overlookers Society Leeds and Yorkshire Engineers and Firemen's Association Leeds Brassfounders and Finishers Society Leeds Cloth Pressers Society Leeds Clothiers Union Leeds Coremakers Society Leeds District Patternmakers Mutual Aid Association Leeds Friendly Society of Spanish and Morocco Leather Finishers Leeds Grinders and Glazers Society Leeds Horse Collar Makers Trade Union Leeds Jewish Rivetters, Slipper Makers and Finishers Trade Union Leeds Jewish Rivetters, Slipper Makers, Finishers and Upper Machinists Trade Society Leeds Jewish Slipper Makers Trade Protection Society Leeds Jewish Tailoresses Union Leeds Jewish Working Tailors Trade Society Leeds Patternmakers Association Leeds Society of Brushmakers Leeds Society of Mosaic and Tile Fixers Leeds Tailoresses Union Leeds Tailoring Protective and Benefit Society Leeds Terra Cotta Model Makers Society Leeds Upholsterers Trade Society Leeds Wholesale Clothiers Operatives Union Leeds, Halifax and Bradford Stuff Pressers Trades Union Society
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Hi Buffaloskinner. If in your searches you come across one Henry Smith who was, I believe secretary to one of the Leather Trade Unions some time around the 1950s/60s,I'd be obliged if you were to let me know. He was my uncle, a wonderful man no longer with us, and unfortunately there's no one in the family left to ask which Union it was.

What a fascinating list buffaloskinner.I particularly like these:-Leeds and District Scribbling Overlookers Association. Leeds and District Willeyers and Fettlers Union. Leeds Terra Cotta Model Makers Society. Leeds, Halifax and Bradford Stuff Pressers Trades Union Society.I've no idea what Scribbling, Willeyers and Stuff Pressers were! I wonder if there are any models still around from the Leeds Terra Cotta Model Makers?

One that always make me cringe is "Human Resources Officer"Why not stick to "Personnel Clerk" instead of giving theposition a High-falutin' non title!

Just goes to show what industrys we have lost its no wonder this country is in the state it is in.And what does the government say we will create more jobs doing what i ask they dont even want to keep the steel industry alive if more money had been put into modern plant then we would have been able to compete with the rest of the world instead of relying on imports for every thing.Sixty years ago Leeds was a boom town you might say its a boom town now but there are few jobs for the working class and the trades men all but gone i have worked with men who were proud of there skills there i go again ranting on.
No matter were i end my days im an Hunslet lad with Hunslet ways.

What a fantastic tribute to Leeds' industrial heritage the list is - and remember it's only the ones Buffaloskinner has never heard of! I wonder what percentage of the working population of Leeds was in industry then, and what that percentage is now? (No doubt some brilliant SL scholar will give me the answer quick as a flash!)
