Or possibly longer? Cira 1988 i had a basement flat on Ash Grove for a while that used to have problems with water coming up through the floor. When i went to look at the flat (April 1st 1988 lol) i did wonder why there were odd little bits of carpet around the place, until i moved in and realised they were strategicly placed to cover the bits in the floor where the water came through. The landlady insisted it was the council's problem with drainage and i should complain to them, so i rang them and they came out and condemned the flat, which the landlady then told me was all my own fault for ringing them! Then she insisted that she could get the floor fixed. That was summer 1988, she was still insisting she was getting it fixed when i got the notice to vacate in December. And the flat has been empty since then, for 20 years now. Then I saw this in the Yorkshire Evening Pest website:Leeds residents despair over ten year water leakPublished Date: 21 November 2009By Sophie HazanResidents are in despair over a water leak that dates back 10 years.A constant stream of water has been trickling up from underground at Ash Grove in Headingley, Leeds, for at least a decade.Despite the best efforts of residents to get Yorkshire Water to fix the leak it has yet to be plugged.Residents are concerned that a cold snap will turn the road into a sheet of ice. They are also questioning the quality of the existing pipe work."No-one ever seems to get to the source of the problem, which I imagine is the Victorian water pipes," said resident Anne White, who reported the current leak at the beginning of the summer."They frequently dig up the road and never achieve anything."She added: "It's not spouting, but there is a constant stream. It's just such a waste of water and it needs fixing properly, not justpatching up."Sue Buckle, a Headingley homeowner and community campaigner, added: "The leak on Ash Grove has been "mended" at least twice before now, but then water starts coming up in other parts of the road."It is as if contractors have simply resurfaced the road to cover up the water, rather than getting to the bottom of the issue," she added.Laura McBride, 22, who also reported the issue after moving to the street in July, said that she had stopped parking her car there due to the depth of the water."Our road is constantly wet," she saidA Yorkshire Water spokeswoman told the Yorkshire Evening Post that the leak would be fixed by the end of Tuesday.Workmen did not arrive until Thursday and far from having the leak under control, had left a four foot square water-logged hole, which was still there when the YEP went to print.Yorkshire Water – which has known about the current leak since March – says the leak is located somewhere along a four-inch cast iron water pipe. The spokeswoman said: "We understand why people who live in the area have become frustrated, particularly if they believed all the leaks were coming from the same burst, but we would assure them we have always tried to respond as quickly as possible and we have actually carried out a number of repairs."Residents say that they will only believe the job has been done when they see it with their own eyes."http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 844312.jpI wonder how long the 'leak' has really been going on for?
Evil and ambition scatter in the the darkness, leaving behind dubious rumors to fly in public. To the next world, I commit thee.

i wonder if this is actually a water pipe leak?it also looks very like what happens when a spring pops up in a new place because of subsidence elsewhere. I can't recall any wells in the area off the top of my head, but wonder whether there is one showing on the old maps?
Steve JonesI don't know everything, I just like to give that impression!

There's no culverted beck in that area. The nearest one is round the back of Hyde Park Terrace, it swings south at the west end of the terrace. The end of the terrace originally follwed the line of the beck, the last houst being triangular. Later infill built over it, which is unusal. The beck joins the sewers at Back Ebbertson Terrace. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... &z=19Can't see any springs mapped or other water courses in that area. Which isn not to say their isn't any. Ground Water is often mistaken for leaking mains water but it's easy test for the presence of chlorine, which i assume's been done. The most likely explanation is that it's a ropey old main that keeps bursting possibly due to ground movement and traffic.
