I just came across this fascinating site about the Leeds Rent Strike of 1934:http://freespace.virgin.net/labwise.history6/1934.htmlI had never heard of this before stumbling across it by accident looking for something else!

was'nt there another rent strike in middleton around 1981?

One message I take from that site is just how stratified and class ridden society was back then, everyone seems to have had someone to look down upon.
