I would hope ther are many of you that would like to sign up for the Leeds bid to be a host city for 2018 or 2022 World Cup.backthebidinleeds.comhttp://www.backthebidleeds.com/index.php?optio ... temid=5The council and LUFC and many ex players are combining to try and get some World Cup games to Leeds.LUFC have said that they will redevelop the Revie and West stand so the capacity will be 50,000.Im certainly a supporter, but if we do get this then the council will have to make a better fist of the job than in 96 with the Euro Championships. This is a different level, and if we do it right then the City will not only benefit at the time but it should also hopefully benefit in the long term with increased tourism. However,i think some of you would agree that Leeds is cedrtainly lacking on a number of fronts.Though its a long way off i think that the city needs to have a number of drastic improvements.Transport is the big one. With no modern fast public transport system in place (NGT????) then i think we will look a long way from being a modern and vibrant city. Then theres hotels. We now have no 5 star hotels,Oulton Hall has lost this now.May not seem important but what is the point of people from around the world coming here if we cant offer the widest quality of hotels. The state of the roads, namely the Ingram Road approach and the inner ring road in general.they struggle on a match day at 30,000,what would they do with 50,000?The rest of Elland Road, its a dump.Ok so the Bates motel and shops are going ahead, but what about the rest of the derelict eyesore around. Not a good impression for international visitors. The town centre itself currenly has huge development holes in it (Trinity/Eastgate/Wellington Place)This may well be because of the current economic climate but can we be certain that these developments will go ahead, after all look what happened in Bradford. The town centre has patches of quality surrounded by swathes of dross.Duncan Street, lower AND upper Kirkgate (dont get me started on lower Kirkgate!!!),upper Briggate.Would redeveloping thse areas take away some character??All of these may well be unimportant compared to many social issues that face the city, but, along with the (hopeful) Arena we may be able to boost visitor numbers to the city, thus bringing more money and the businesses that are attracted by this. The knock on effect is more employment opportunities, something from which we can all benefit from,an improved environment for all citizens and a higher profile for the city.Im signing up,i hope you do too,BUTWhat else do you we need to do as a city,or do you think its a waste of time??Lights the touch paper, and stands back...........

Is this not a front for Mister Bates to get a new ground built for him? Elland Road need rebuilding to be a viable option. LUFC can't afford it, who'll pay to build and maintain it?In 96 I was living in Birmingham but came back to leeds. Birmingham Council's efforts were streets ahead of leeds, fan campsites, shuttle buses, city centre events and entertainment, interaction between fans and locals. When the Dutch were in town it was one big street party.

I'm definitely backing it; from a personal and work point of view (personally i think it will be great for the city, and work..well i work in a hotel!) Totally agree with cnosni re. the improvements needed; I just hope that the council also realises that all these things need to be sorted for the city to be in with a serious chance; and that it needs sorting sooner rather than later before its too late! I'm sure DSCO and the guys at marketing/visit Leeds will do a great job getting the back up they need from the public; lets hope the council listens and backs us up!!

Well im glad to see some interest in this.I think that the council is berated by many (including myself) for missing the boat on golden opportunities. For once it looks like theyre going for something, and i would have hoped for a wider reaction, either positiveley or in the form of constructive criticism,or even downright cynism.Ive said before on this site that it appears that Loiners have,on the whole, little appetite for such matters but are ready moan about the lack of amenities and events etc in the City.

Further development towrds World Cup bid.iNew 2000 capacity ice rink and new road infrastructure to alleviate traffic,i suppose away from Elland RoadSERIOUS BID: Coun Andrew Carter wants to show the Football Association Leeds means business« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryADVERTISEMENT Published Date: 06 August 2009 By Paul Robinson AN INDOOR ice rink planned for Leeds would give a perfect lift to the city's hopes of joining the 2018 World Cup party, council bosses believe. Proposals were first revealed last month for the privately-owned and managed 2,000-seater rink next to Leeds United's Elland Road ground. And today a senior councillor said the smart new look the development would give the area around Elland Road could only strengthen the case for the football stadium to be a 2018 host venue. Part of a 15-acre plot between the ground's John Charles Stand and Elland Road itself, the site earmarked for the rink is regarded by many as an eyesore and mainly used for matchday parking. The scheme would also see the construction of the first section of a new loop road which would ease congestion near the ground – a prospect that should further help Leeds's 2018 ambitions. Coun Andrew Carter, executive member of Leeds Council with responsibility for city development, said: "We want to show the Football Association how serious we are about 2018. "The changes the ice rink would bring about are the ideal complement to that." Leeds is among 15 cities competing for the right to stage World Cup matches in 2018, should England get the nod to host the money-spinning soccer tournament. The FA will announce the successful candidates by the end of the year. Leeds's bid is being spearheaded by United, Leeds City Council and Marketing Leeds. To register support, visit the www.backthebidleeds.com website. Businessman Mike Petrouis is part of the private sector team behind the Elland Road ice rink plans, the Yorkshire Evening Post can reveal.Mr Petrouis is involved with top industry brands Planet Ice and Silver Blades, which already operate rinks in places such as Altrincham, Birmingham, Coventry and Cardiff. His team is being given a six-month exclusivity deal on the council-owned land earmarked for the Leeds rink.elopments on this front,a new ice rink and road infrastructure at Elland Road.

I know its been mooted many times before, but surely a railway halt at Elland Road would be essential for the World Cup.Plus it would reap benefits in the future, after the Cup
