The Strega was a classic. Not really a Blues as it was legal but didnt feel like it. You went in down the steps and they made you go through the formality of signing a visitors book. Most of the names were things like B.Marley, D.Duck, A.Hitler etc. The 'bar' was a behind a metal grill and they used to pass cans of Red Stripe through a hole.I used to go the The Blues sometimes in the mid 80's. I remember Sonny's, Skippys (one of them was under a cafe I seem to remember) and one in a Terraced House behind the Gaiety which I think was called 67s when we went. My mate and I were the only white people in a pitch black house containing about 150 herb smoking locals. A great night!

More late 80's for me though but Strega, Sonny's, Twighlight Zone, great nights. Never had any bother either. Iut was all a bit naive I suppose but there was a seedling drug culture then and I suppose we just ignored the underlying dangers as we were out for a good time.

Might take a walk round Spencer Place, Francis street etc later tonight with that playing...or maybe not!Another couple of Chapeltown venues I forgot to mention -Cosmo's/Phoenix. Always a mixed crowd in there which lulled many a young man into a false sense of security. Staggering off down Francis street in search of a curry on Roundhay Rd only to be separated from their wallet en-route!Also, the 'notorious' Hayfield. I actually took a girl there New Years eve 86 or 87. We'd been in Foxes and at 2am decided we wanted to carry on. I'd been in the Hayfield disco a few times with mates and decided we'd be ok. I soon found that going in with a few lads was totally different to pitching up at 3am with a girl with long blond hair! An interesting night was had to say the least...

There were 3 blues sort of behind the Gaiety, Sonnys, Cliffs and the one you're thinking of is 62's there was also 49's on Spencer Place.
