I assume that it's a regional thing and readers in Birmingham will have their own area, but we have our fair city, or indeed borough, as it was in 1870. That's quite important because the city centre is, as always, at the bottom left of the map and Long Marston is top right with Wetherby in the top and middle as a focus of the railway lines. It explains a lot about Leeds even now.

It's not really Leeds, although Leeds features in the bottom left hand corner, the rest is Wetherby, Sherburn in Elmet, Tadcaster and places between there and Leeds - the old railway lines are very clear on it though.

I read recently in some blurb made for the Palace (pub) that there is a boundary stone set in the wall of Leeds Parish Church that marked the eastern boundary of Leeds. Those living outside the boundary in medieval times had to do jury service etc. in York. Long way to go but explains why even then why Leeds was bottom left of maps.

Isn't that known as the 'Eastern Bar'? The Northern Bar is set into the wall of what was the West Yorkshire Bus Station at the top of Vicar Lane - don't recall where the west and south boundary markers are though,

yes chameleon, the east bar and if you and sundowner are correct my route to work takes me in very close proximity to the three of them after I get off the bus! I would imagine the southbar is in the vicinity of Leeds Bridge
