Sadly just another day of what at one time would have been shocking sensations, but now is juat daily routine.    I don't care what Government and Police statistics say about falling crime rates, they don't convince me at all.    This once great country is awash with it - progressively fouler and more evil - we are paying the price for decades of excessive tolerance, criminals' rights, trivialised and unpunished crime and , for those who are inside, excessive welfare (I'm not confusing that with basic decent human rights) and ridiculous early release. Never thought I'd see the day when you couldn't bank on being safe in your own home, and to go out necessitates a continual subconscious security exercise. Personally I love the country too much to emigrate, but I can well understand the thousands who do.I've seen Pat Reagan on TV often and heard her on radio. An incredibly brave lady but sadly, nowadays, a voice in the wilderness so to speak.

You missed Government "targets" for the police off your list, Blakey.

Yes indeed Si, you're right there - that's just another feature of the "spin" that they hope will convince us that "everything in the garden's rosy." Just two horrifying recent examples of what I mean are the rise in this "happy slapping" business filmed on mobile phones, and yesterday's teatime news about a fifteen year pld schoolgirl in Waterloo visciously stabbed to death in her lift on her way home.I'm sometimes accused, not nastily, by friends in my circle of being a "Job's comforter" and looking on the black side - but I plead not guilty to that and insist instead on facing reality.Just one more example - an almost blind lad in our transport circle was assaulted and robbed last Sunday by a gang of thugs - dark alleyway at night I hear you ask ?? - no, Infirmary Street in broad daylight.

I've just discovered, to my absolute fury, that the man accused of murdering Mrs. Regan had earlier the same day been wrestled to the ground ON THE TRACKS in Leeds station by SIX railway staff, one of whom he stabbed - so why oh why was he at liberty that afternoon to murder his Grandma ???? He should have been in immediate custody (with his knife) awaiting trial for such a serious crime in the station, or at least confined some way as he seemingly had mental problems. Very sadly, we really do "ask fo all we get" in this country for being so incredibly soft !!

Presumably he had murdered his gran and had then gone to off himself on the tracks - she was found later on, not killed later on as far as I can tell. The chronology of events isn't coherant from the reporting, but it doesn't suggest he was released after the station incident.I used to live in Hyde Park, she was quite a well known figure there and respected for her work. It's a sad loss for the area.My own perception of crime (living in areas of Leeds where it is relatively more prevalent) is that it has improved hugely in terms of things like burglary and car crime over the last decade, although has got a bit worse again over the last year (you could speculate this is due to economic factors, or the early release scheme). Having said that, the level of violence in crime between younger people seems worse, but how much of that is down to the level of reporting - people were stabbed and killed when I was growing up too, but it was never sensationalised as much as it is now. Motiveless attacks are still exceptionally rare.

If, yes I see what you mean now. The reporting is indeed unclear in that case. It came across to me as if he had been found still in the flat with Mrs. Regan's body in the afternoon. However I hope you are right and that he had gone to the Station afterwards with whatever intent - if so at least there hadn't been a fatal error in judgement in leaving him free to commit this heinous crime.

by all accounts they had him down at jimmys the day before screaming out for help but they wouldn't/couldn't section him???maybe now they will listen eh???????? and yes jf your right for some reason of late the press just seem to be jumping on the" violent crimes at home bandwagon"what ever happened to the wall2wall war on terror that we used to get piped on a day to day basis? people are still dying in Afghanistan and Iraq but for some reason or other we seem to be concentrating on the 'terrible' situation here at home..................i wonder why?
