A quick Google images search reveals the home of these, scroll through the series. Oddly, I would have thought being their origin being the RAF, I suspect that their copyright may well actually be vested in the Crown :!:

Oops. I've just had a look at the legislation.
Crown copyright.

Copyright, Designs & Patents Act 1988
Sec. 163 Where a work is made by Her Majesty or by an officer or servant of the Crown in the course of his duties—
(a)the work qualifies for copyright protection notwithstanding section 153(1) (ordinary requirement as to qualification for copyright protection).........
.........(3)Crown copyright in a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work continues to subsist—

(a)until the end of the period of 125 years from the end of the calendar year in which the work was made............

Some years ago, because I had a bunch of Crown Copyright photos that I wanted to post on my Flickr site, I contacted the MoD before I posted it and was informed that their [Crown] copyright lapsed after 25 years and that as the photo has a date stamp on the back - on a sticker that says Crown Copyright. They were fine for me to use it provided I gave the correct attribution. Sadly, their reply was by email which I nolonger have. I'm certain that they said 25, not 125 so I may have to revisit this!

The rules about Crown Copyright are complicated. There's a flowchart at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... wchart.pdf to explain it. Even though the work might be Crown Copyright it's possible that it might be licensed under the Open Government Licence, which means you can use it as long as you display the right copyright notice: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/info ... gl-covers/

Thanks for that but I distinctly remember that the email said "lapsed". I would certainly have remembered had it been anything else.
On a slightly separate subject, I spent a long time photographing the Leeds Corporation Licencing Registers and would love to publish the pictures but the West Yorkshire Archive service stick rigidly to the Act and were more than willing to let me publish the images - thousands of them - at twenty quid a pop!

Hi Brunel, I knew there was an entire album but couldn't search too deeply just then, thanks. My remarks regarding copyright were, as much as anything, to illustrate that the images, even if out of their original copyright, were not the personal property of any one individual despite possible thoughts of some to the contrary!
