http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... 41.jpTykes who think Yorkshire's rolling countryside has more to offer than exotic settings like the Taj Mahal, Ayers Rock or the Maldives can vote for God's own county in the travel trade's equivalent to the Oscars.Tourism chiefs at Welcome to Yorkshire have been nominated in the World Travel Awards 2010 and will be taking on the crème de la crème of the global market in categories for the world's leading tourist board and the best marketing campaign. But it's votes which count and Welcome to Yorkshire is hoping home support will help clinch titles which would put the region firmly on the global tourism map.Voting at: www.yorkshire.com/vote closes on Friday and the competition is tough. Rivals include tourist boards from the likes of Australia, India, Jamaica, Las Vegas, Cancun and New York who will all be represented at an award ceremony in London on November 7.But, while he acknowledges it is not going to be an easy ride, Welcome To Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity is adamant Yorkshire has earned its shot at the limelight."This is global recognition for all the hard work we have been doing with our partners to raise the profile of Yorkshire as a leading travel destination," he said."We are in illustrious and esteemed company but that is where Yorkshire belongs; Yorkshire is a world-class tourist destination and our nomination recognises that. "As England's only representative in the category, Yorkshire can be very proud already. We are a leading example to the rest of the country of how successful tourism can be and we hope we can do the county and the country proud and win."Welcome to Yorkshire has already won a number of awards since its launch 18 months ago.In June it scooped the TravelMole award for best tourism website for the second year running as well as the best use of video award. That followed success in May when it won the People's Choice award at the Chelsea Flower Show for its Rhubarb Crumble and Custard Garden. And last year, at the International Business Forum's awards, its A Long Weekend in Yorkshire Isn't Long Enough campaign won the prize for the most innovative marketing initiative in 2009.
