The whole building has gone now, replaced by more offices. There was a late bar (Len's?) around the corner on York Place(?) we went in too occasionally. The original TC's (Top Cats) was round by the old Registry Office and was rough as a badgers....the "new" TC's was under the Merrion and was only slightly less rough but had it's charms ;-)And "The News" underneath the Queen Hotel with the revolving dancefloor, which became the Bondai Beach Bar (after my time) and is now set to be Leeds biggests gentlemens barNot strictly a night club but Top Banana at the Town and Country were some of the best nights out of my life. The T&C lives on, we've started doing Top Banana again, back where it belongs
By popular demand, the North's legendary 80s night is returning to its spiritual home, the Leeds O2 Academy, formerly the famous Town and Country Club.Established in 1991 (the same month as Back to Basics and predating School Disco by 8 years).

It was an oldish chap who had seemingly spent his life savings opening the place, but it might be the same Len. Nice bar too, but lasted just over a year as he'd more or less picked the wrong time to open.York Place is something of a barometer for the local drinking economy. In the last year Len's opened and closed, Indie Joze closed and the owner of Baby Jupiter sold up. The gentlemens' clubs seem to thrive though, and the Old Steps survives, but it will probably outlive the cockroaches.

Yes, there was Len's bar, owned, not surprisingly by Lenny Cohen, who also owned Digby's the night club next door. This helped the cash flow a bit, and so far as I remember both were opened for longer than a year. I remember some pretty good early doors sessions in Lens and finishing off much the worse for wear in Digby's afterwards

"We are the Gall-er-ee, we're all on XTC". By the way the Gallery was originally The Coconut Grove. It was a restaraunt cum Jazz Club(nice!!).George Melly and Ronnie Scott played there, Ricky's was the club downstairs. Gallery was great used to love it in there. Steve Lugi and Tony walker where the Djs, great days.
