Hi all,Does anyone know of any cricket clubs/teams in the Beeston area circa 1860/70's at a guess. My Great Grand Uncle played and we have a team photo. A cup was given to him with the following inscription Presented To: H. Duxbury By W. Hanby For Batting Average There are no other identifying marks on it nor do we have any idea when/where the photo was taken. We have tried to trace it without success. Maybe someone knows who W. Danby was. Any help would be greatly appreciated to start us on our way. Unfortunately the site won't let me upload the photo. Thanks for your timeRegardsDamian Glover

Its not widely appreciated these days, but cricket was by far the biggest sport in Victorian times, much bigger than the various forms of football which were very much in their infancy then. There would have been several cricket clubs, at many levels, in that area around then - off the top of my head there were relatively big clubs like Holbeck C.C.,Hunslet C.C. , Hunslet Nelson, Leamington C.C.,Leeds Parish Church C.C in this approximate area and all ran 2 or 3 different elevens. On a lower level most churches and chapels had their own teams as did many pubs, mills, breweries, factories etc

I have done a bit of digging. In the Mineral water bottling companys Street Directory, there is a Wilson Danby of Domestic Street, Holbeck. This would make sense as I would think a business person of some sort would be the sponsor of a cup. I may be barking up the wrong tree but it does seem to add up. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi, my apologies if this is the wrong place, but, I was doing a spot of gardening a couple of years ago in Churwell and dug up a pot screw top with the name Wilson Hanby written on it. I believe they were a ginger beer and mineral water manufacturer based in Water Lane, Holbeck. I've been unable to find any photos of them on leodis. I have been able to find some details here:

http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... eadID=4038 cham, I wonder if tiddler was helpfully trying to identify the W Hanby that was the subject of the enquiry on this thread rather than making an enquiry of his/her own. It does seem likely that a cricket trophy was donated by a local employer.
