From two sources the surname differs in this newspaper article from 1916 it's Zelicman
In the 1911 census it's Zelickman

Thanks Mick, I knew I’d seen his original name somewhere. I prefer that to the article on the episode in the magistrates court! Are you related?

If Joe Fox’s real, original surname (and presumably that of his parents and brothers) was Zelickman in 1916, I don’t understand how he could have relatives mentioned on this thread with the surname Fox going back to the late 19th century. I assume he changed it by deed poll at a later date.

I don't know whether or not this helps but I have often used this website when searching for information about Jewish people in Leeds. There is an entry for Judah Zelickman and there is a photograph of his grave stone (click on the links):

Thanks for that, yes, I visited it a few years ago. The Fox family details in your link are correct to my knowledge. The Hebrew on the gravestone photo gives his name as Yehudah ben Moishe, so Judah son of Moses but Joe Fox as his English name below it.

Yes it is a bit confusing as to why my nans birth certificate says the surname fox in 1901 and your grandad joe fox didn’t change his surname to fox until a later date!
