Leodian wrote: Thanks for your response Liits, which is appreciated. In your response you state (in relation to the photo in Leodis) "Contrary to one of the comments that accompanies the photo, the premises were never rebuilt". I assume that refers to the Leodis comment in which it states "Yes this building was a pub right up to early 1980's it was called "The Precint" for the last few years of its serving life. In the 1960'S it was still called "The Golden Cock"...". If there was a pub there I have no recollection at all and I would think I would remember one in at least the 1980's. If there was one at that time then my memory recollection is even worse than I thought! Everything you could reasonably want to know(but were afraid to ask), including photos, about the Golden Cock/Precinct is covered by the "Inns and Pubs of Kirkgate thread" on this site Here is the entry from that thread; The Golden Cock/the Precinct. Now a branch of Superdrug.its address is 13/14 Kirkgate(no 13 in Parsons 1826, Pearson and White(1830)Pigot 1830,1834,1841, Baines 1834,White1839))First appearance 1797 directory.Listed in 1800,1807, 1809 and Baines 1817, 1822(no number given)The present building is a rebuild of an earlier Inn.This pub has been well covered before on secret Leeds - so rather than go through much of it again please look at its thread here;http://www.secretleeds.co.uk/forum/Mess ... 0&#3248The Pub underwent the name change from The Golden Cock to the Precinct in 1972/1973 and closed c1986(last yellow pages entry)

Thanks drapesy. Your response is very helpful and also confirms that my memory is not just poor but is appallingly bad, as I have no recollection of a pub there to at least about 1986. Anyone ever asking me for my recollections of Leeds will be in for a great disappointment.

Weenie I think the Chapel on Czar Street was a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. I have also found it referred to as been on Isles Lane wich runs at 90 degrees to Czar Street (see attachment)http://tithemaps.leeds.gov.uk/LargeMap. ... L3&tabR=R1(Czar Street is on the bottom left of the map you will have to scroll it up, my apologies)http://flic.kr/p/a7hMXj

This map of circa 1875 shows it better as it is marked as Wesleyan Methodist Chapel

Although addressed as Czar Street, the chapel is listed in the Leeds Directories as the Isle Street Chapel, a 1200 seat Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in the Holbeck Circuit.

Just been looking at Tithe maps, and according to where the old chapel photo is, wouldnt that be the mission room, just by the viaduct?. on Crossland Street?. i was thinking could it be the building down the other end? and wouldnt that be the old buiral ground - the mound and railings area on google street view as im trying to finds out where they would have been buriedhttp://g.co/maps/eb5xwRegards Weenie

I reckon that burial ground is part of the mound and the remainder of the area, southwards, to the boundary of the park.Leeds City Council has info on closed burial grounds [[email protected]] but don't expect a quick reply.
