I vaguely recall seeing the 1953 Coronation on television at home (mum must have rented one, if only for temporary use, as they were far to expensive and unreliable to buy) but I do recall some neighbours coming in to watch. I doubt that people would now come in to watch somebody's TV. I remember mum renting a Sobell TV but that may have been later.j.c.d. wrote:In the 1950s when very few people had Television sets, some folks who did used to leave their curtains open even when it was very dark showing off their expensive purchase. this was before the Rental system came on the scene.

I remember seeing the coronation on telly at the home of our neighbours the Spencer's. I was only 4 and afterwards we went to the party at the church hall at Cottingley. Someone stood me on a table and I got a threppney bit for singing 'show me the way to go home'. Well brig up I were!

The other outward sign that you had bought a TV in 1953 was of course the shiny new aerial on the roof. The early ones were large H shapes.
I distinctly remember playing football in the street, aged 5/6, and looking up to see a forest of new aerials.

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Very many years back there used to be a man on television whose popular act was whistling, but for the life of me I can't recall his name. Does anyone please remember what it was? I recall he used to do most of his whistling holding his hands to his mouth whilst moving his fingers (I never mastered that art of whistling).

Leo, I think it may have been Ronnie Ronalde. I remember he did a unique version of "If I Were Blackbird". You don't get acts like him on TV nowadays!
