I remember my Grandma eating pig's cheek - the teeth were still in themBut then that's another thing you don't see many of these days - pork butchers. Charcuterie they call it in France. There used to be a pork butcher in Morley - Greens but they've gone. There used to a real old fashioned one in Cas - Matthews they sold the lot - pigs trotters, pigs cheek, chitterlings, pig's bag (I daredn't ask) Black pudding is still widely available - buden noir in France, bludwurst in Germany, Salami di sangue in Italy. They have it in Spain too. Polony is just an Anglicised version of Bologna sausage I think.

'But then that's another thing you don't see many of these days - pork butchers'Was thinking that earlier Trojan. There used to be one on the parade of shops to the left of Somerville Green next to the former Melbourne on York Road. Can't remember the name but was next to Broadbents Green Grocers. I thought there was a piccy on Leodis but I can only find the shops on the otner end of the parade. Was not Cardis' on Station Road in Crossgates also a pork Butchers? The business came to an unfortunate end some years ago now.

I just stumbled across an article about Leeds in a 1950s Geographic magazine and in the mag is a full page ad for the 'Officially Recognised Drink' for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Tho' this product is still available I don't think you'll ever see it advertised in quite this way ever again. Any guesses while I try to load my scanner driver or photograph it?

The latter had two plaster pig characters in the window which looked suspiciously like Pinky & Perky! Otley's pork butcher closed a couple of years ago. Their pork pies were excellent.

I used to get sent to cardis' for the sandwiches and Craven dairies for the cakes. The shop was in that really dingy arcade of briggate near the house of fraser

There was a Cardis on Lands Lane in the middle of Leeds, but an unfortunate Salmonella outbreak closed it down. Also, Newtons on Kirkstall Rd fell to the same fate in the mid 80's

The cause was a very simple oversight, although it shouldn't have happened.

Apparently the pies and food stuff was on route to a wedding aand it was proved that the contamination was NOTHING to do with the shop at all. However, it didn't save it from the inevitable public mistrust! Closed down shortley after. Such a shame!
