My favourite was what people would write on the Durex machines. Apart from the obvious ... cuts out oven doubt ... and ... Buy me and stop one ... worst chewing gum i ever tasted ... my favourite was written right next to the 'Approved to British Standards" sign .... so was the Titanic.

Marketing. They made a lot of gross profit on each suite. My dad worked for Price's, that amounted to about half that list and as many others again. Basically the punters were getting off the peg suits but with the added benefit of being measured for it and getting a "fitting" when the suite was half made. All that amounted to was a lot of big white cotton tacking stitches and some random white chalk marks, with the shop assistant pulling on it to fit, but the punter thought he was getting a Bespoke quality made to measure suit. The quality of the shops and the shopfitting (mahogany panels), the racks of bolts of cloth and the "Total customer experience" were as much part of the product as anything else.Bits about this (Burton's to be exact) in one of the Yorkshire Post videos (Hopefully DVD by now !).
We wanted to make Leeds a better place for the future - but we're losing it. The tide is going out beneath our feet.
