Okay - a new tidbit to tuck away about Leeds "back in the day" when my greats were there - but it was still a good play on words about the sun shining so it must be a Sunday.

As mentioned earlier the hospital is just across the road from the cemetry.Dakota willprobably find the museum which is based in theoldest part of the hospital interesting and get an insight of life in those days.www.thethackraymuseum.orghttp://www.leo ... 3_164620If you look at the above 2 photos from Leodis you can seethe state of the housing/poverty as recent as"1956"thoughI think this was the exception rather than the rule

Thanks - I looked at the picture and it is pretty darn grim - hard to believe it was the mid 1950's. I'm going to look at the musuem site now.

I had forgotten how many graves there are in that cemetery.Hundreds !!!!!!!!!!Have e-mailed 'the friends of Beckett Street Cemetery askingthem for help.Hopefully they cn point me in the right direction.Never noticed until today, but the large bsic headstoneson the communal graves are located between 2 plots and inscriptions of the dead on both sides of the central stone.Very frugal that generation.

Thank you so much for pursuing this - it's so frustrating not being there - like I can see it, but I just can quite reach it. I'd love to be able to just scoot over to Leeds for a couple of days and follow all of these tantalizing clues, but that's just not possible, so I really appreciate you following where the clues are leading.

I found a nice aerial picture on Leodis of St James's Hospital. The cleared site of Glebe Street can be seen to the left of the cemetery. I'd guess this was taken in the 1960s?
