They had an electric fire starter, electric fire starter, (sorry, nod to the Prodigy) that must have heated up like a big curling tong or something, that you popped under the dog grate to help get the fire going. never saw one before then and never seen one since. Sure I'm not dreaming. This was the late 70's.In the late 60's early 70's my uncle worked on the coal waggons. Whenever we ordered we were always assured of an extra couple of bags. shhhh. Hi shutthatdoor What you said about the electric fire starter got me thinking. I remember Gas Pokers were used in some houses to start the fire.

I tell you what you don't see anymore, but at the time were 'proper' stylish: ball point pens with a digital clock in them. Back in the day if you had one of them you thought you were a film star!

I got new everything ,shirt, tie short trousers, socks and shoes, maybe a sleeveless wooly jumper! We would then go round our neighbours to show them off and they would give you some money for your new clothes! I don't know how our parents afforded to buy these things but they did somehow. I can remember one year in about 1951-2 .I had been to my Grans in Holbeck to show her my new clothes and was waiting outside the "workhouse" in Lane End Place for the 46 bus back to Hall Ln ,Armley, when some kids who were resident there tried to rob me.I ran like the wind back to my Grans losing most of the money people had given me out of my pockets! The kids chasing me stopped to pick the coins up so I was able to escape! After I'd recovered I went back out but waited at the stop at Dewsbury Rd Police Station! about the end of the war my Mother kitted us out with our "Whitsy" new clothes and because we always got a penny from relatives who saw us i went to Sunday mass at Corpus Christi 'cos my Aunty would be there and i would get a penny even though i lived on the Gipton Estate. after mass my cousin suggested we go to Temple Newson Pond by the Tram track, so off we went chasing frog, newts or toads. i saw a newt on a log and reaching over i fell in, the water was filthy about two foot deep, enough to soak me and my new clobber though and through. i dare not go home so stayed out all day until i was dry. for the life of me i cannot remember what happened when i finally did go home.     Happy days.

What ever happened to the Train case that was essential for young lasses to carry about with them. a piece of glass on the inside of the lid for a mirror and not much else seemed to be in there but in the 50s and early 60s they were everywhere. Cigarette cases with a lighter combined, my brother had one and his jacket had a special pocket inside with button fastener otherwise the weight would drag the coat out of shape. (the lighter never seemed to work)

(the lighter never seemed to work) I still have one, cigarette case/lighter combined, in the drawer somewhere. The problem I found with them was they made your clothes smell of lighter fuel, this was in the days before the gas ones were introduced. It also had a spring-loaded arm in the case to hold the cigarettes in place which nearly squashed them in half. Needless to say mine is like new.
Daft I call it - What's for tea Ma?
