I've had a reply from a curator at the regiment's archives."The only thing to say about [the picture] is that it is likely to be one of hundred’s. They are wearing 1914 leather webbing which places it after 1914. One man on the floor is wearing gym pumps. The age range is wide so they are recruits in training after 1916 (conscription). There is nothing indicative in their uniform or equipment to suggest place or date.Sorry I can not add anything further."Thanks to Geoffb for supplying the address and phone number.

Its a shame they cant shed anymore light on it though, is there a web site for the Prince of Wales Own ex service men?

It is sad that nothing can be determined about the men in the picture. It does surprise me to read that it is likely to be one of hundred’s of such pictures, as I would have thought that most would not have survived. It is a reminder to give some information on photos. I am though a big culprit myself for not doing that, as I have hundreds (mostly touristy snapshot views) that I have taken that I keep meaning to make a note on but never get round to.

Yes, somebody in the future will spend hours researching a holiday snap of yours and getting nowhere! Remember not to write on the back of photos in biro - apparently the acid in the ink eventually rots the paper. I think someone from the photography museum in Bradford gave this tip on telly some years back.I have a Victorian photo album of members of my family, but none are annotated, leading to the incredibly frustrating position of having a complete family tree of names, and another of photographic portraits, but no way of combining the two!
