Does anyone have any information on The General Peel? It used to be off Beckett Street before they flattened the whole area in the 60s.My great aunt used to run it in the 30s.

only that my uncle mick lived opposite,will look for who he was though...the general,not me uncle mick.

Is it anything to do with Robert Peel, as in the founder of the modern style police force and Prime Minister from 1834-1835 I wonder. According to Wikipedia:"Jonathan Peel, fifth son of the first Baronet, was a General in the Army and Conservative politician. He was Secretary of State for War from 1858 to 1859 and 1866 to 1867"Apparently the family seat is Eelmire House, Ripon.

thats about all i could find too,apart from some reference in various horsey circles.i wonder if 'the peel' was named after him too?

just been looking up the admiral duncan,he defeated the dutch fleet at camperdown.obviously the old pub was named after him...but was duncan street? in the same way wellington street was after wellington???    

1770 map of Leeds has no street at this location,just a hotch potch of yards and Ginnels by the look of things.By 1821 Duncan Street appears in Fowlers Plan of Leeds,so considering old Dunc did the business in 1797 then i would have to say youre write Herr Von Wigglesworth.
