Why the 'City' in the City of Mabgate Inn name?

I wonder if anyone knows why the 'City' is in the City of Mabgate Inn name? I've done some searching but have not readily found anything relevant. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably the same reason that most other public houses get their name, its location and a touch of grandeur to attract customers.

The City of Mabgate public house was closed down and converted into flats approx 12 years ago or so

Thought to look up earlier referencies. In 1854 it was The City Inn, Mabgate

But by 1857 it is The City of Mabgate Inn, Mabgate
