Why the 'City' in the City of Mabgate Inn name?

Post by Leodian »

I wonder if anyone knows why the 'City' is in the City of Mabgate Inn name? I've done some searching but have not readily found anything relevant. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably the same reason that most other public houses get their name, its location and a touch of grandeur to attract customers.
Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

Thanks buffaloskinner :). That does seem to be a likely explanation.

Thought to look up earlier referencies. In 1854 it was The City Inn, Mabgate

But by 1857 it is The City of Mabgate Inn, Mabgate
