Would it be Hallam's Northern Hotel? If so, it closed in 1920 "License not applied for at the 1921 Brewster Session. Premises pulled down for the building of a new cinema and restaurant".

Curious. There are several photos on Leodis of City Square in the 1910s and no sign of this place. The Black Prince went up in 1903 so perhaps it was cleared prior to that?

Probably stating the obvious but Liits reference is to Hallam's Northern Hotel and its licensing to 1920s. Uncle Mick's refers to the Midland Hotel (railway connection?). Different buildings probably and like GeordieExile in the many photo's of city square I have seen I don't recall ever seeing a building actually on the southern end of the square itself i.e. on the North side of BoarLane, Wellington Street or whatever road, if any, links the two

SPLAY=FULL I think this proves it. The opening ceremony for the Black Prince would surely have been obscured in the photo presumably taken from the original Queens if there was still anything on the South SideI can't see the sign for the Northern supposedly appearing in this http://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL but my eyesight has never been brilliant very close up

Leodis's 1890s pics of city square seem to be mainly of toilets but do include this http://www.leodis.org/display.aspx?reso ... 0_98154849

Hallams Northern Hotel marked Northern Hotel on the 1891 map, as suggested this is on or near to the site of the Majestic
