Looking at some maps in the Old Maps UK website I noticed in a 1:2500 scale map of Leeds for 1933 that there was a Hope Inn at the area that is now the Vicar Lane/North Street junction. Looking through other maps of the same or larger scale there was no inn named there from 1850 to 1921 (the very nearby Templar was named even in the 1850 map). A 1964/1970 map still has Hope Inn there but a 1981/1984 map showed it was not there as the area would have been developed for the Inner Ring Road. It was therefore a surprise when I checked the Leodis website to find an image dated 1872 showing the Hope Inn there, so it was there at least as early as that. ULLKnowing there is a newish looking Hope Inn at about the Pontefract Lane/York Road junction I assumed that was built to replace the Hope Inn on Vicar Lane. However, on checking Leodis I came across images of an old looking Hope Inn at Pontefract Lane going back many years and up to one dated May 12 1967. That image had houses that were about to be demolished and presumably that Hope Inn also. The current Hope Inn at Pontefract Lane will presumably therefore have not been built to replace that on Vicar Lane.The maps dates imply that it is possible that people still alive could have used both pubs, so I wonder if any SL member did? It must also have been confusing having two pubs with the same name so near.

The Hope Inn, North Street [junction with Hope Street], was beer house holding a Wine License and, as such, may not be marked on a lot of maps.The Leodis picture is the original building. This was replaced by new premises which opened on the 29th September 1898.The newer premises underwent some alterations to gain a Publican’s license and this was granted on 29th April 1927.As you say, the premises lasted well into the 60’s and was lost to the development of the inner ring road.As ever, click on the red X for a map / Google Earth overlay.A = Hope InnB = Victoria HotelC = Crown & AnchorD = Harrison ArmsE = Templar HotelF = Wren's

The present Hope Inn on York Road was a1960’s replacement of an earlier premises of the same name. It too was demolished to allow for road works, this time, the widening of York Road. Leodis also has a picture of the earlier pub.A = Hope InnB = Hope Inn [demolished]C = Crown HotelD = Stag Hotel

My wife read book sometime last year,a novel based in thisarea of Leeds about growing up in the early 2oth centuary.I believe that the Hope Inn-Hope Street area was mentioned,will havea look to see if she still has it.

Re Hope Inn queries ~:-From Leodis1902. Buildings on Lands Lane prior to the demolition. The one to the right is the old Hope Inn, listed in the 1888 directory as Olds Shades Vaults. Wall to the right of the photo is covered in posters, mainly for the Tivoli Theatre. Two men are standing in front.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... ifier=1175

So to 1902 there was a Hope Inn on Lands Lane and the one at the Vicar Lane/North Street junction. Meeting up at the Hope Inn could have been very confusing! A hop in at each Hope Inn might have been a good compromise for a drink or two, or more!

There were a few more... Low Moor Side; certainly lasted into the 60’s. Reuben Street; closed 1914. Roundhay Road; renamed the Prince Arthur in 1873.The Licensing Register doesn’t indicate that Shades [Vaults] was ever officially known as the Hope Inn so I wonder where Leodis got the information from. But, as Leodis identifies, it was listed in the 1888 Trade Directory as Old Shades Vaults. Up until 1901 when the License was surrendered, it was listed in the other Trade Directories as Old Shades Vaults too. Looking at the photo a little more closely reveals the words “Wine” and “Shades” still above the front of the premises. My guess is that Leodis’ info may have gone on safari a little bit.
