There is a report on pages 16-17 in the YEP today (Sept 2 2011) titled 'Real ale revival - as pub decline goes on'. The report has 8 photos of boarded-up pubs. If there is an online version of the report I could not find it.PS. In view of the many messages in threads in SL about pub closures I found it amusing that the YEP refers to its report as "Another YEP exclusive".

The White Swan sems to have had some problems with it's attachment to the City Varieties.In 1907 the following conditions were added to the license."This license is renewed annually upon the following conditions, namely:1.    That the sale or consumption of intoxicating liquor in the Music Hall premises takes place only in the two rooms show upon the plans deposited with the Clerk to the Justices viz, the room on the second floor marked “Smoke Room” on the said plan and not in any other part of the music hall premises whatsoever.2.    That no intoxicating liquor be supplied in the Music Hall premises to any customer who has not paid the ordinary charge for admission to the Music Hall or is not a performer or a servant employed in the premises.3.    That the drinking bars in the Music Hall be open and the sale and consumption of intoxicating liquor take place only during the time between the commencement and determination of the public performance provided that the same be within the hours allowed by the Licensing Acts in force for the times being.4.    That all means of communication between the Music Hall and the White Swan adjoining be kept permanently walled up so that no person whatsoever will be able to pass from the Music Hall to the hotel except by way of the open street".This was noted again at the renewal in 1948;"This license was renewed upon application in respect of the White Swan only, the Music Hall being dropped from the licensed premises, subject to the following conditions, namely, That all means of communication between the White Swan to the City Varieties Music Hall adjoining be permanently walled up, so that no person whatever will be able to pass from the White Swan to the City Varieties Music Hall except by way of the open street"The plans deposited with the Clerk to the Justices show that the premises as two distinct business' and the type of license for the Varieties changed from a Publican's License to a Theatre License.

I know it's been posted before on here but you used to be able to walk into the City Varieties Headrow entrance, turn right and go through a door and you would come out into the Piccadilly Bar at the bottom end near the toilets. Not directly from the Music Hall admittedly. But that entrance has been walled up again since the 80s I think.

They also need to invest in a West Yorkshire A to ZThe Thornhill is on Bradford Road,not Stanningley Road as reported in the published article.The Regent "has literally gone" - it was demolished weeks ago.

Its no wonder you can get the evening post at lunch time.They dont even know what time jt is.
