Was the Pioneer in Leek Street Flats the only example of this? Used to pass it as a kid and was always fascinated by it. it was about 4 floors up.

No, the Sphinx (latterly the Cottingley [ now boarded up[) was a separate building to the flats

Oh yes Drapesy - my failing memory - so it was. I had mistakenly thought that it was sort of "built in" to the entrance foyer.

The pub in the old Seacroft Centre was the Sovereign.

Jimbo5553 wrote: The pub in the old Seacroft Centre was the Sovereign. The Sovereign used to be a decent enough pub in the early days of the Seacroft centre development. Spent many happy hours supping ale there with my old Dad when he lived in one of the tower blocks there. I take it from Jimbo5553's use of the word "was" that it's now gone the way of so many other Leeds pubs? If so, sad.
