Hope someone can help. Does anyone know any information or remember the Goodman on Goodman Street, Hunslet? A relative of mine use to run it around the 1950's Isaac Spencer, possibly with his brother. I know Isaac (Ike) was also a bare knuckle fighter and had his last fight outside this pub when he was in his 60's. I am trying to find out more information on Ike, was he married, children etc and the pub, who was the brewery, how long was Ike there? Etc. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

Can't help much I'm afraid, but when I worked at Wallace Arnold in Donisthorpe Street in 1963-9 the Goodman was still doing well in Goodman Street - one thing I'm pretty certain about is that I'm sure it was a Tetley's house.

Here's a picture of the building( now called Goodman House) I took a couple of years ago - the building is still there, not sure when it closed as a pub - early 90s I think.

And here's a Leodis pic of the Goodman in 1959. At that time it was a 'Ramsden's' pub.

Many thanks for the replies, the pictures are great and nice to know the building is still standing, wonder what it is now? I may see if I can contact Tetley (thanks for that info Blakey, strange - my brother use to work for Wallace Arnold in the early 1990s) and Ramsden to see if they have any further information on past landlords.

Its the head office of CBM construction see link here -.
http://www.cbm-construction.co.uk/I doubt you'll get anything out of Tetley's to be honest - they're now part of Carlsberg Tetley whose sole interest seems to be making large amounts of cash - history, such as historic pubs, drayhorses, 200 year old breweries etc etc mean little or nothing to them.Ramsden's, a Halifax brewery, disappeared in takeovers many years ago (40+) Sorry to be a 'wet blanket'! I think your best source of info will be trade directories - copies are held in Leeds central library.

It's certainly listed in the 1914, 1916 Kelly's Directories [Licensee, Wilfred Crowther] and in the 1925 Leeds Trades Directory. There was a pub on the same site [and judging by the shape of it, the same building] as it shows on the 1908 Ordnance Survey map.
