The Regent 109 Kirkgate (I don't know what happened to No 108 - it must have been combined with 107 or 109 at some stage - the Regent does look like it might have been 2 buildings at one stage)This old pub is the last of Kirkgate's 4 surviving pubs. This Leodis pic shows it and the adjacent Mason's Arms when that pub was still open The pub and its Yard are listed in Baines 1817and 1822 without a number. It appears in Parsons 1826, Pigot 1830,1834, Baines 1834, White 1839 as being at 109 Kirkgate. It may be that one of the pubs listed in the 1797 directory which I have not yet placed on Kirkgate -(see second post on page 1 of this thread) changed its name to the 'Regent'. George IV, as he was to be, became Prince Regent in 1811 - so the pub name would not have made sense before then.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

The Harp TavernNo 113 Kirkgate.(1898 directory)First reference found in parson's 1872/73 which places it in Coxon's Yard)On the other side of the(former) bank to the Regent was the Harp Tavern. It does not show on the 1847 map but by the time of this picture in 1906 it was already derelict and shortly to be demolished

This picture from around 10 years ago shows the Regent, Lloyds TSB bank (which has recently closed) and a 'First Bus' (formerly LCT/Metro) information booth on the corner of New Market Street. The latter building occupies the site of the 'Harp Tavern' Red Lion119 Kirkgate A beer-house listed in 1898 directory.King's Head/The Black Boy.128 and/or 129 Kirkgate.A King's Head' appears in 1797,1800, 1807 and1809 Directory and Baines 1817 and 1822 without a number - although Baines does call it "top of Kirkgate"Parsons 1826 lists it at 128 and Pigot 1830 at 129, but its name changed in 1830 - Pearson and White (1830) calls it the Black Boy at No 129 but in another part of the Directory calls it the 'King's Head (now Black Boy)' Pigot 1834 lists the Black Boy at 128 Kirkgate Baines 1834 and White1839 have it at 129 but Pigot 1841 has it at 128.Appears to have closed c 1876-1882 - it is listed in McCorquadale 1876 but is missing from Post Office 1882 directory and I can find no further references.Possible photo on page 4The White Swan. This ancient inn is shown on Cossin's famous 1725 plan of Leeds. It was on the south side of the corner of Briggate and Kirkgate. Cossin's shows the 'New Prison' on Kirkgate to be adjacent to the White Swan. A passageway is shown running from Briggate along the south side of the White Swan and the prison, it then turns north and exits into Kirkgate approximately opposite the site of the 'Golden Cock'.

Mind you, that Dot seems to be spilling out of it's own thread and getting every where....

I sussed you were bookmarking a space to fill in later Drapsey. I think if we ask Dunki nicely to delete our comments you can carry on with a full thread here! I did try the same thing with the skulls but that too went pear shaped and got a bit dotty lol
