There used to be some nice etched windows with the 'Fountain name on them - but they disappeared years ago. the former name lives on as the part of the pub to the left is called the 'Fountain Room'. (Another pub that has expanded into adjacent properties!)     One of the first pubs I ever went in.I think it was a Websters house during its days as The Fountain. It was indeed - and i think it still belongs to that organisation, or their successors ,although they haven't actually brewed anything for many years, and just buy beer in from others (like Whitbread , Bass and many smaller organisations)

If I remember rightly, and its a LONG LONG time ago LOL LOL, I was taken into the Woolpack aged 16/17 by an older friend and treated to a "gill" of Hammonds Mild - being a habitual worrier (then AND now) I spent the next week or two looking furtively over my shoulder for fear of imminent arrest LOL LOL
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Ive put a bit more info on from 4 Leeds directories which are on online at Genukihttp://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Otley/they are Baines 1822, Pigot 1829 and 1834(almost identical) and White 1837They only cover the centre of OtleyThe following pubs are included - see the individual entries for more details;Current pubsBay HorseBlack BullBlack HorseCross PipesFleece/Golden FleeceRed LionWhite SwanBowling GreenKnown closed pubsMelbourne VaultsLeeds HouseWhite HorseBlue BellCock and BottleHalf MoonNew InnRoyal OakQueens HeadFountain(Yeoman)WoolpackPool is included in Pigot 1834 only (spelt 'Poole') and includes the White Hart. The Half Moon is absent - the only other pub listed for the village is the 'Spotted Ox'In addition there are the following pubs ;Barley Sheaf , Boroughgate (in all 4 directories)George Inn , Market Place(1829,1834 and 1837)Carpenter's Arms, Boroughgate(1822 only)Green Man, Kirkgate (all 4)Grey Horse, Kirkgate (all 4)Plough Inn , 'Top of Chevin' (1822,1829,1834)Wilson's Arms ,'Otley Chevin'(1837)Smiths Arms 'Upper lane' . (Pigot 1834 only)Notes It may be that the Wilson's Arms is the former 'Plough' - perhaps there is some link to the RoyaltyI have not located Upper Lane (Smith's Arms ) it may not be in Otley.Pigot, 1829 lists both a Wool Pack and a King's Arms on Bondgate - which would seem to contradict the idea from Leodis that the Woolpack was formerly the Kings Arms - however the same landlord is given for both (John Walker) leading me to think it is on the cusp of the name change.A number of town centre pubs are missing - so perhaps not old enough, although the buildings certainly are;Rose and Crown, Junction, Manor House, Mason's Arms The Ring O'bells is absent - and in fact no pub is listed as being on New Market.I suspect that the Whitaker's Arms is a later name change (after the Halifax brewery(?)) - I suspect it was either the Green Man or Grey Horse. Similarly the Melbourne Vaults must be a later name - I have seen a book ('This Little Town of Otley - Walker) which refers to a 'Traveller's Rest' in the Market Place - but I have found no other references to it. Possibly a former name of the Melbourne Vaults or Leeds House.Work goes on I'll keep you posted![p.s -still working on Kirkgate pubs - I haven't forgotten!!]

LOL LOL ...and that spiv Pte Walker in the trench coat outside the pub! Looks like Pte Fraser couldn't find a babysitter, so he's had to bring the little 'un along! Never knew he had that much lead in his pencil at his age!

I don't know where they were, or when they shut, though. The George. The Wharfedale (not the one in Arthington.)The Wheatsheaf. The Staff Inn.      Lots of new info imminent - including location and pics for all four of the above. (last should be the 'Star' not 'Staff' - in Elsie Brumfitt's history of Otley she calls it the 'Staff' at one point - but I think this is some sort of typo - it was definitely the Star) and pics that were previously 'missing'!!

The only pub I've been in in Otley is The Poacher - I'm not even sure it's still there. My abiding memory is being in there at the same time as Ian Botham and Alan Lamb - they were drinking pints of Old Peculiar, and due to face the West Indies terrible foursome the following day. Can't really remember how well or ill they did.

I was told on Friday night that the Royalty is closed - whether that's Otley or Aireborough I'm not quite sure, but I thought I would mention it here.
