I believe the Wetherspoons in Leeds City Station was in the first 10 nationally to apply for a 24 hour licence but I understand it was turned down. It must be open around 18 hours a day though.

I was in the Palace last year just before it came in, sat at a table, and there was a woman stood with her back to me, holding a cigarette in her hand and it was pointing straight at my face, the only way to avoid it would have been to leave as it was so crowded. I gave up smoking and I'm damned if someone else is going to do my smoking for me. If they want to smoke let them do it outside!

If they want to smoke let them do it outside! well i'm of the opinion that people who don't like smokey pubs should not go in...maybe we can have both....pubs for smokers ans seperate pubs for non-smokers,then everybody is happy, and a tradition that dates back to before the roman conquest won't die ???

Any one remember the name of the pub that stood looking down Meanwood Street at the intersection of Lower Camp Rd / Meanwood St / and Oatland Lane.....on the opposite side of the Rd, you had the Alfred, and at the bottom of Meanwood St, you had the Kings Arms (Kingi), then you had the Oatlands along Alfred Cross St...but I can't remember the name of the other one.RegardsFrank

We used to live further on from the Alfred in Kenealy St, and can remember the Irish navvies stripped down to the waist having fist fights by the old gas street light outside the pub, with the guys forming a ring around them. The landlords son was a ginger haired lad that used to muck around with us on the Oller's behind the pub after they had started to pull the houses down on Meanwood St.

Hi Drapesy,I have thought of a couple more lost Leeds pubs that I don't think have been mentioned and I don't know if you are aware of them.Firstly, there was The Grapes which was situated on Woodhouse Street at the junction with Shay Street. I think that the Charing Cross Shopping Centre was built on the site. There are pictures of the pub on Leodis. Secondly, there was a pub called The Springhill Tavern situated at 137 Buslingthorpe Lane. There does not appear to be any pictures on Leodis but there is a reference to it. My grandmother lived in Scott Hall Drive and I used to walk past the pub, from Woodhouse, when visiting her with my parents in the 1950's. I do remember it closing down and then becoming business premises but I am not aware whether or not it is still standing (I doubt it).Ian.
