I remember when this was a pub best avoided by real ale lovers - but now it has a good range of cask beers - not cheap though. Puts a lot of emphasis on dining. The reason it was best avoided? I believe it was a Whitbread house,'nuff said.

Until the 1960s it was a "Bentleys Yorkshire Breweries" pub, and until just before that it was only the corner building - then a very old cottage on the Leeds side of the pub was incorporated to make a larger place and create the present dining area.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

drapesy wrote: Was this the picture of the Original Black Horse you were thinking of Si??? it dates from c1894. No, that's a different, better picture. The one I've seen was taken from across the road near the Buttercross. If I remember rightly, it was during demolition, with the roof gone and workmen in the windows. The new Black Horse changed the whole look of the middle of Otley. The Bistro seen in one of your other pictures has been shut for a while. When it first opened, they had an excellent French chef. The stables are often used for big-screen football matches like the World Cup. A temporary whicker wall is put up in the gateway so only paying customers can watch.

"BYB" was sometimes refered to as "baby's yellow babba!"

By George you're right Si - just look at the leading three chaps under the "Brooke Bond Tea" sign - if they're not (left to right) Private Godfrey on a stoop free day, Private Fraser and that "stupid boy" Pike - I'll eat my hat !! LOL LOL

This is a Leodis pic from 1988 that shows the Black Bull and The New Inn. On Leodis the caption states that it was taken shortly before the New Inn closed but I'd say, judging by the removal of the signage that its from the period in between the pub closing and it being fitted out as Superdrug. The lower windows in stained glass are still in situ.

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.
