Does anyone know if Hoagy's has closed (bottom of Headrow, near the bus station roundabout)? It looked like they were doing a re-fit last week as they were removing all the furniture, but they don't seem to be putting any stuff back in now that everything has been taken out. Also I think the front door was boarded up. Maybe they are flogging the furniture or using it in one of their other pubs, and then selling the building to someone to use as something else.

Hoagies must have closed for good then, all the buildings on the bottom of eastgate are due to be flattened for the Eastgate/Victoria gate/John Lewis complex.

I forgot about the rebuilding work being planned around there (have been away from Leeds for a few years, and only just returned). They used to have a number of Pool Tables upstairs, so I suspect they could be sold on for a few bob, which is probably why they have made an effort to clear out the pub interior. Not a pub, but I've also noticed that The Hummingbird Bar in Chapel Allerton (used to be 'Angel Share') is closed and up for sale.

Heard a whisper about the Merry Monk on Kirkstall Hill. Might have to watch this space.

I don't suppose the proponents of the Eastgate Quarter revolution/destruction wonder plans have noticed that the former beautiful Headrow Shopping Centre (one time Schofields) has been a largely empty ugly clincally white ghost arcade for years - and is just too uninspiring to use even as a short cut. The previous beautful shopping centre, in green and gold, and with a multitude of interesting outlets, eateries, and conveniences, was demolished on the feeble grounds of "jaded" and "needing a facelift" etc etc - crikey the cement had hardly set after it was built !! The destruction of the once fabulous east/west Headrow/Eastgate through thoroughfare is nothing short of a crime.Bring back the REAL Leeds I say - a self confessed grumpy old traditionalist just very sad at seeing the spirit and character of Leeds vanishing
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Its all down to making money with no thought on how it looks move with the times we are told. Bah Humbug.

Its all down to making money with no thought on how it looks move with the times we are told. Bah Humbug.     Im not pleased about the destruction of the book end building, far from it,and i certainly agree with the sentiments about the Schofields centre, what a waste of a perfectly good shopping centre. Green and gold it may have been but it was light, airy and fully occupied. However the Trinity development has proved a real boon, with footfall in Leeds city centre rocketing since its opening. One could argue that some stores closed and relocated to Trinty (of which 14 did),resulting in empty units in the city centre. In fact since Trinity opened 48 units in the city centre closed. However 84 were opened/occupied,so thats a net positive effect and look what Trinity has done for Boar Lane, its completely rejuvenated the west end and continues to do so.Victoriagate phase 1 will be different to Trinity in that (as far as i know) it wont be open late (though there is a casino within phase 1 so perhaps there may be a degree of later opening. But lets be honest with ourselves. The area that is going to be developed is a bloody eyesore, its a wasteland between Eastgate and the market and its a wasteland between Eastgate and the inner ring road.It is going to be done in two phaseshttp://www.constructionenquirer.com/wp-content ... .png.Phase 1 is the redevelopment of will see the lovely George Street car park being the centre of the development. This is what is proposed on George Street car parkhttp://www.victoriagate.co.uk/about/plans/There will be a John Lewis built onto it and a multi story car park built on the soon to be demolished Millgarth police station.http://www.victoriagate.co.uk/about/car-park/The buildings on the south side of Eastgate, with the exception of the bookend. Hoagys dont even match those on the north side (where Akbars is), and arent particularly of any merit architecurally or functionally. They were built in the 50s to finish off the development as cheaply as possible. This view is from the market looking north towards Eastgate, you can see the buildings on the northside of Eastgate on the mid left. The main building in the front is where the Madhouse was.http://static.squarespace.com/static/51 ... gn.jpgThis development has prompted the council to ACTUALLY start to do something with the market with regards to much needed but never carried out work to bring it up to date. This is a view of what is proposed for the demolished south side Eastgate buildingsThis view shows the middle of Eastgate, with the middle of the northern range of buildings removed to make a public square and to open up the old Lady Lane chapel, which wil part of pahse 2.http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost. ... nt=3972All i can remember, since i was a nipper,is these two pieces of Leeds city centre being an eyesore. To leave them as they are is criminal, and its a shame the old book end is going, but i wont be crying to see the removal of Millgarth and the creation of jobs at a time when they are at a premium, both in retail and construction. There will probably be a knock on effect too with Quarry Hill, a development which has been on the backburner since Victoriagate was mothballed a few years back.I hope this development (phase 2 and Quarry Hill) will have some degree of residential, something that is now badly needed in the city centre, something to bringback some of the life and community which has been sadly lacking since Quarry Hill Flats / The Bank were demolished.I think that we all miss elements of old Leeds,i know i do,but we cant stay as wwe are, otherwise we would still be going to the market on Briggate and getting our flour ground at the Kings Mill for a price. Some good news, the Templar,as far as i recall, will be part of the phase 2 development.
