The general wade was threepenny bit shaped, it was revamped in 1979 and became the nautical wheel, i think it changed again to the box office. I think (correct me if I'm wrong) it became 'Panama Joes' after it was the Hofbrau Haus. That was a place you get in aged 14 and they never asked for ID! After Panama Joe's it became 'Sam Miguels' (does anyone else remember it in that incarnation??) then it became Yel! (with one 'L' and an exclamation mark). We used to go in before going to Ritzy's or Mr Craigs.I was over at Lakeside today (large shopping centre close to where I live in Essex) having a spot of retail therapy. A bloke on a till asked me 'where are you from?' so I said 'Leeds' (as you do) and he said 'I thought so, I used to live in Leeds, I lived there for 12 years and my parents used to run pubs' so I asked him which ones and he reeled off a right list of boozers including the Coburg and the Pack Horse! I wasn't expecting that in deepest Essex :-)Did anyone used to go in Madisons? Who remembers triples for a pound in Sunset & Vine? A night out for me and my mates would involve The Bank, The Bond, The Observatory, Stumps, Lichfields (had a good juke box with stuff like The Smiths on it), The Boulevard, Sunset & Vine, Barneys (became Swans later on, I've no idea what it is now) and clubs would be either Ritzy's (or Confetti's as it was when I first started going), Mr Craigs or Madisons (slumming it, haha).

Anyone remember that, long tables and German beers? I sort of remember it being underground on maybe East Parade.(BTW The Newlands was my local until it burned down. We just made it look bad to keep the students out ) Hi,My mate mentioned the Brahms and Liszt yesterday. I think it changed to the Sunset and Vine in the late 80's beneath Madisons Nightclub ( it's now Zurich municipal on East Parade ).A personnal old favourie of Mine was Stumps under the Central Library, and also Harlequins next to The News Nightclub ( now Baha Beach I think )

I remember Harlequins was ideally placed for the bus stop so became the first watering hole in town (isn't that the one that became the Piano Bar next to the Queen Hotel entrance).Stumps was a much loved and vastly under-rated pub. I can remember watching Frank Bruno win his title in there and playing bar billiards (badly) on long summer afternoons

Hi all. Great thread! It's kept me amused for a good hour. Our circuit was Hope Inn [York Road] to get tanked up, then Whitelocks, The Ostlers, Pack Horse, Piccadilly Bar [The Swan], King Charles and the [old] Wine Lodge on Commercial Street. Of course I was a very under age drinker heh. Does anyone remember you could get through to the Piccadilly Bar from an alleyway at the front entrance of the City Varieties? I was told that the artistes used to use the route when they weren't on stage. It's walled off now. Mention of Bill Nelson reminds me that I saw Be Bop de Luxe on one of the Thursday night live band nights at The Fairway. I also saw Ginger Baker at the Fforde Grene. We used to do the York Road run too. Hope Inn, Victoria, Dog and Gun, Wykebeck. And the East Street run. Waterloo, Dog & Gun, Fisherman's Hut, Spring Close, Yew Tree. We used to trail up to the Staging Post on Thursdays too to see live bands. I'd better shut up or I'll run out of memories.

There is a pub called Hoagy's near Millgarth, is that the pub you mean? Me and my husband used to go in O'Reillys on a Sunday night for a few drinks before I went for the bus home (when me & my husband when we were "courting".) It was full of real characters in there.

Not Hoagy's, It was on the top corner of the car park on George Street outside the market doors, before the shops were demolished! I was told a guy hung himself in the doorway once!
