there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I think the one on Kirkgate (Parrot) was so called because the landlord was called Mr Parrot. I'm sure I saw it somewhere in one of the directories or voters lists.

I've found a reference to the London Tavern in Kirkgate Market, run by Matthew Kitchin in 1837 and Thomas Cogill in 1859 (not sure if that counts for your list, as it probably didn't have a frontage onto Kirkgate).

Lots of new information added -please have another look through at page 1 if you're intersted![Wiggy - if you read this I would be grateful if you would edit out your reference to the 'Green Parrot' My mistake in identification caused me to confuse it with the 'Grove Tavern'. I have now amended this and so that renders your comment meaningless. thanks]

A pic I found on Leodis taken from Call Lane. the Tetley sign at the far right is for the 'Mason's Arms and shows how much the pub extended round the corner - it was a big pub - unusually so for the city centre.

I really enjoy this continually updated thread. Any plans to cover Briggate next? How about combining them and publishing an illustrated coffee-table book - Pubs of Leeds by Drapesy?
