Looks like the Kiln is to be shut for ever now.Following the recent shooting notices have been put up locallyadvising of "A summary review of the licence"by thepolicedue to a serious crime, disorder etc.Theowners are apparently Southport based and have ownedit for several years, more bother than it was worth during that time.

I'm surprised that place has stayed open as long as it did, and to be honest it was probably only the rogue element using it to keep it open

Troublesome element base themselves in a pub (with the manager having little say in the matter and the distant pub company owners turning a blind eye as long as the profits keep coming in) and the authorities choose to remove the licence, closing the pub and simply move the problem elsewhere where the needle returns to the start of the song....My parents used to frequent The Kiln in the early 70's, they always preferred it to The Sportsman (which was unusual for my dad as I think the Kiln was a John Smiths pub then) before we moved out to the leafy suburbs.

It doesn't seem that long ago that it was refurbished and reopened - sadly to no avail it seems.I remember working on Regent street in the early 90's going out with some workmates for a few pints, taking in the City of Mabgate, Black Horse, Plasterers and Regent. Try doing that today!

I'll echo that drapesy, it certainly is sad news. I used to work on Mabgate (Skinner Lane end) in the mid 70s and both the Black Horse and the Mabgate were regular lunchtime, early doors and after-overtime haunts for me and a couple of workmates for about three years before I changed jobs. Many happy memories of them both.

I took a photo of the Black Horse yesterday herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/6248973789The door was open, but the for sale sign is up, and also the pub sign at the side has already gone

The BH was built in exactly the right place and did its job so well for so many years. It still impresses even now. I hope that they manage to keep that classic frontage after the sale. (You're right - someone did "rescue" that sign a bit sharpish didn't they?)
