The Alexander, The George, The Cattlemarket, The Barley Corn, The Smyths, The Cemetry, to name but a few. Any photos of these would bring back some great memories. The Alex and George were on a road leading down from Cattle Market to Domestic Street I think. The Barleycorn was on the bottom of Whitehall Road somewhere near Readmans, with another pub next door, whose name I've forgotten. The Smyths was on Geldard Rd. and the Cemetry was on Tong Road, higher up than the Beech. Welcome to the forum Spartacus ("I'm Spartacus!") and thanks for that info - I havent heard of several of the pubs you mention. I do remember the Smyths - I've had a pint or 2 in there. The Smyth's has its own thread, though sadly no-ones tracked down any photos. I've just posted a message on it so it will now be in the Active Threads section. The Cattle Market also has its own thread - more about the actual market than the pub, though there is the only pic we know of the pub. This thread is in the"Unusual Buildings and Structures" section. Its also worth checking out a thread called the 'Lemi' about a recreation ground in this area you might recall. I'm putting up something new on there later.I remember a pub on Whitehall Road called the Goodman's - was this the one next to the Barleycorn or is it further up Whitehall Road??Above is a picture from Leodis of the Cemetery Hotel - would I be right in thinking this is near where the 'White Rose' pub now is??

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I wonder if you remember this one Spartacus? the wonderfully named 'Skew Bridge Hotel' at 19 Gelderd Road. it survived to the mid 60s. According to a comment on Leodis you can make out 'The George' in the distance on the left of the photo - I think you need to know what you're looking for though!

Boom boom.Actually Cemetery Tavern was once quite a common pub name. The Eldon in Woodhouse, The Florence Nightingale opposite St. Jimmy's and the Parnaby in Hunslet were all called that originally so Leeds had at least 4 pubs of that name at one stage. I can remember one on Leeds Road in Bradford too, but that , like almost all the pubs on Leeds Road has gone.

The Skew Bridge was the one I'd forgotten. My dad used to be a painter and decorator for Duttons, Whitbreads etc. and I used to visit him on a dinner time at some of the pubs. The Goodman shut only a couple of years ago. It was a favoured call for Pettys and Monkbridge workers. Famous for "afters" with the shift workers. The George and the Alex were both Tetley houses I think. The photo of the Cemetry reminded me of the Cattle Market. Very similar in shape and frontage. On a similar theme to one I've noticed on here, can you come up with the first pub on the left (or south) of Whitehall Road heading out of Leeds from Aire Street ?

Crikey - I'm racking my brain and looking at maps - I cant think of anything till you past Drighlington - something in Birkenshaw perhaps? anyway, was The Cemetery near the 'White Rose'? the White Rose is obviously newish (60s/70s) and I wonder if it was a rebuild and they decided to change the name?
