And as we got wed in 59, her grandad retired from the pub.Unfortunately for me I thought at the time.! She's now racking her brain for all the brothers that attended there. And your grandad Tommy. No, Terry's brothers [my Dad and other uncle] weren't drinkers. Terry was a french polisher at the time I think, Tommy was working at Appleyard's. Other families around at the time were the Murgatroyds, Henlocks, Windsors and the Tappins. I seem to recall there was another pub near The Oak. And further towards Meanwood Road School was a parade of shops with a great fish 'oil [Ben Shaw's sign outside I think] and where Meanwood Road met Cambridge Road at the bottom there was an offie with a huge Sandeman's port sign.

Possibly Peter and older sister Shirley.? Ah yes, The Fox I'm thinking of.I only remember Jimmy Tappin but there were quite a few of them I think.

There's a "Hogshead" on Lower Briggate - this too is not an old pub (cf Stick or twist on Merrion street)Its sometimes hard to distinguish between a new 'pub' with a silly name (Rat and Parrot etc) and a trendy bar - in fact what is the distinction?

I don't remember this personally - but I understand that this was the King Edward on the corner of King Edward Street and Fish street. I've been told that like Whitelocks it was famous for its "Luncheons".

And here it is in 1991 before the Leeds 'Perm' became part of the 'HBOS' empire.

I think it was renamed the Portland for a short period before becoming the cafe bar it now is.Whats the difference between a pub and a (trendy) wine bar? I think real ale for a start but then the Qube owned by Wychwood (dogs whatsits, hobgoblin......) and now Cocoon fitted both as did the much missed Stumps and probably Harveys (complete with Pookah) now a lapdancing joint.I suppose pubs tend to have individual character whereas the wine bars are designed to the formula of the chain and woe betide any manager who tries to be different. I would miss the H&T, although it could have done with a better choice of ale on recent visits, as I would the Scarborough, Whitelocks, the Duck and Drake and the Palace. I wouldn't miss Oceana, Slug and Lettuce, Edwards or Tiger Tiger
