Thanks Ian. Very puzzling - if, as the Wetherspoon's spokesman said, they have no definite opening/continuation-of-work date, and only "remedial work" has so far taken place, why do the very professional-looking banners on the fence say, "opening April 2010?" Someone told the printers to put that date on it...

Isn't that the one which, in the happy 50s and 60s, enjoyed the magnificent nickname "The House of the Swinging ****" ?? On a family site like this I couldn't possibly publish the nickname in full. I know there are two pubs close to each other in The Green, so have I got the right one ??

No Blakey, the Red Lion across the road had the nickname you refer to, or just "swingers" for short, due to an over enthusiastic lady piano player who liked to wear dresses with a plunging neckline

I remember the pianist very well for her wonderful playing if nothing else I believe she was the landlady and was quite old even in the 1960s. After a horrendoius snowy Winter drive to Scotland and back one night a friend and I called in and found we were the only customers. I seem to remember that she had white make up and a bit of lipstick "thrown on" as long as it was somewhere near the target. As soon as she served us she went to the piano and gave us a wonderful mini concert which included the Tritsch Tratsch Polka beautifully played at a speed which I'm sure has never been equalled before or since - and not a sheet of music anywhere. A wonderful character.Sorry to digress folks - now back to the sad closure of the New Inn.

Hi Big Steve, your mention of Bonar Colleano reminded me of some great nights out following this amazing character around theWorking Mens Clubs of Yorkshire. His rendition of Jesus Christ Superstar was truly awesome,Mick Gale used to have to stop in andhave his piano lessons whilst we were all playing footie, needless to say we never got anywhere and he had the last laugh.Do you remember Steve S------ and Brad used to be in Rockabilly Rebels?Iused to have a couple of singles of theirs. There used to be another good band mainly lads from Cow Close/Farnley who used to do a great rendition of I Don't Like Mondays but can't remember their name.Big Sam B---- used to play lead he's doing DJ/Karaoke now
