The Black Horse.1 Kirkgate/2 Westgate.Just across the road we have another, though very different, magnificent pile. This is what Barry Pepper would call a 'gin palace' I'm sure. The date near the top of the building reads 1901 - which makes it quite modern for an Otley pub! It was built to replace an earlier Black Horse, a coaching inn demolished in 1900.Closed and briefly reopened in late 2010 with tatty signs outside and a bogus and insulting 'Irish' theme[ and a name that I can't remember, or wish to.]Tastefully restored and reopened in late 2011. Closed again April 2013(possibly originally called 'Coach Inn') (Directories: first found; Baines 1822)

there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

And the entrance to the stables that were once to the rear of the pub. Little can the people who built these know that within a few years they would be redundant.

The Royal OakClapgateNow a solicitor's offices (Savage Crangle)Obviously this was once two separate buildings. The building dates back, apparently to 'Circa 1651' Closed in 1970, when it was said to be the second oldest pub in Otley (after the Black Bull) (Directories: first found; Baines 1822)

The Three Horseshoes/ Horse and Farrier 5 Bridge StreetFor a time in the 1980s this pub changed its name to 'The Lix' before reverting back. I understand that the name (Lix) was the local name for the cattlemarket that used to be held on land to the rear of the pub - now a car-park. Closed early 2011, reopening under revamped 'Horse and Farrier name.

The Blue Bell Hotel 5 Manor Square Compare with photo of pub in late 19th century on page 4 of thread. leaded/stained windows on first floor survive - unfortunately the ground floor has been completely gutted and rebuilt when converted to a bank.Evidence from O.S. maps reveals a closure date in the 1920s. The Bay Horse.Market Place/20 Boroughgate.Cutting through from Manor Square to the Market place brings you to the back of the Bay Horse(Bay Horse Court) - A wonderful, old and tiny pub (you can get that rare animal - cask Tetley's Mild here!) The thoroughfare continues through a ginnel to the left of the pub. (Directories: first found; Baines 1822)

Melbourne Vaults/The VaultsMarket Place/22 BoroughgateI was unaware until it was posted by Si on the lost pubs thread that the adjacent building to the Bay Horse was a pub until the 1960s. It took its name from the Leeds Brewery, Melbourne. In Robinson's directory for 1901 it appears as a confectioner's and dining rooms belonging to John Storr.
