Now that would be very good, if MTT took over The Shoes. If you think of how much business The Cove chippy, 3 doors down gets, it could be a goldmine. Difficult to remember that the Folk Club originally used to meet in the room upstairs. And it used to have a crackin' tap room before Tetleys ripped it all into one for 'The Lix' era. Not sure about the live band focus it's become in recent years though.Fans of Blind Jack's in Knaresborough will find The Old Cock very much to their liking. Small separate rooms and with a quieter upstairs. Very 'rustic' and authentic, with 8 handpumps serving micro brewery ales - not too expensive either.Otley back on the Pub Town Crawl map eh?

After a couple in the Junction (which was much quieter than usual,) we wandered round the corner to the Old Cock. As expected, it was packed (it's very small inside, as anyone who visited the Curlew Cafe/Sugar Street Bistro in the past will know) and so, after a quick look round, we returned to the Junction. I'll try it again over the weekend to try the beer (all in the name of research, of course!)

Research completed, and I'm glad to report that my short visit to the Old Cock was a pleasant experience (fnar fnar.) I had a couple of pints of Black Sheep, which were excellent - good body and very clear. They had other cask offerings from various local breweries (including Wharfedale, Ilkley and Goose Eye.) The only bitter which had had to travel far was Tetley's. The decor is cosy (red) and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. Well done to all concerned!

When can some of this trend start to spead to the rest of Leeds, before Enterprise and The Chancellor shut the lot down? Market Town Taverns are helping. They are re-opening the Waterhole (previously a Hogshead) as Veritas on Great George Street which can loosely be called central Leeds and opening East of Arcadia (east of Arcadia) in Meanwood on the redeveloped site where “The Beckets” once stood. I also hear rumours that due to various issues Leeds Brewery are unable to sell bottled beer in any volume and therefore their best bet of expansion is cask ale into their own pubs so the Garden Gate in Hunslet may well not be their last purchase. The old West Riding on Wellington Street also seems to have a Leeds Brewery influence although the Leeds Brewery website makes no claim of ownership on that one.

The Black Horse re-opened last night as an Irish theme pub. Music on tonight. No refurbishment and the place is still crumbling apart but at least there were a couple of folk in. How long will it last?Meanwhile The Fountain (Yeoman) is up for rent "for a variety of uses subject to Planning Permission". Three guesses what it'll become....
