there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Apologies that this is a query about an inn that was not in Otley but it was not that far away. While having a walk today (Sept 1st) I passed the house that used to be the inn at Clap Gate (between Kirkby Overblow and Sicklinghall). I have tried to find some information on the Internet but my search technigue is probably rubbish. Can someone please let me know what the inn was called, as all my attempts using Clap Gate with other search terms kept coming up blank on the inn I wanted. I would also like to know when it closed as I think it will be longer ago than I think. Thanks.

I suspect that my googling search method needs improving, but I was surprised that nothing readily came up. I was even beginning to wonder if it was not called Clap Gate!

The battle to save the Summercross has, sadly been lost - and four pubs have subsequently closed - all fine historic pubs - The Spite, The Woolpack, the Fleece and the Black Horse. One alone would be a great loss - four is bloody ridiculous. The Black Horse closure is particularly worrying - this magnificent late Victorian building should be listed/preserved urgently.None of the pubs have the metal shutters up yet, so perhaps there is some hope. [update 2010 - all but the Woolpack have reopened but futures uncertain ] Unfortunately, the Black Horse is shut once again.

There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.
