The smoking ban is but just one ickle nail in the coffin of the local! Weather that came in or not the state of the pub would not change.

Whatever happened to "Freedom of choice" ?

Who cares what i think? not the government thats for sure! Me neither ya smelly t**t.. Seriously, it probably has sped up the closure of many pubs, but take a look at the supermarkts for the major impact. Case of stella for a Tenner. Buy two cases of beer for 15 quid. The megolomaniac greed of the supermarkets are killing society that we remember. Couple that with the younger kids growing up only ever seeing the inside of a supermarekt for it's weekly shop and the problem becomes compounded further...So stop whinging ya bleeding lepper!!

Hey! i ain't whinging! just an observation thats all! hardly ever frequent drinking establishments anyway, can't afford it!! but good point well made. i just think the social aspect was winning for the pubs but the smoking ban kicked that in the nuts!!

Some years ago we had a good choice of pleasant, ordinary pubs offering decent beer, usually cask, in comfortable tho not luxurious surroundings, without loud music or noisy gambling machines. Many of these havens no longer exist,or,like most in our Leeds 2/6 area, have become completely student-oriented.We resorted to using clubs(WMCs etc)-not ideal,we do prefer the pub atmosphere-but now even these are anxious to attract younger people by installing juke boxes etc.We just want to enjoy a quiet drink! If anyone knows where this can still be had we'd love to know-please share your secret if you have one.Regards, vjs
