Leeds Lost Pubs - Part 2

Purely supposition. Was Melbourne struggling in its final years and the takeover might have started by stealth with Tetley's taking over some Melbourne houses?

The closed Whinmoor pub has now been demolished. There has been talk of social / affordable housing on the site, but who knows these days? There has been the same talk for the site of the Squinting Cat pub which has remained empty since demolition ages ago...
Funnily enough though, the much longer closed Staging Post (which is also a lot more visible given its location), is still standing and boarded up.

The Squinting Cat/ John Smeaton pub was involved in a fire and reduced to a shell with no roof on 17th August 2014.
It has since been razed to the ground.

It is reported on page 12 of the Yorkshire Evening Post today (June 19 2015) that "Leeds City Council bosses are poised to award a near-£2m contract to building firm Britcon for the construction of 18 new apartments on land in Swarcliffe once occupied by the Squinting Cat". The deal is to start on June 22 2015 with completion on July 15 2016. The apartments are to be a mix of one and two bedrooms.

Those apartments have been announced more times than the platform numbers at Leeds station.
While it's good they're finally appointing a contractor (and presumably about to actually start work), the average cost per apartment for the build is going to be over £108k - that seems an awful lot for what will be built and I'm struggling to see how this can be classed as good value for money...

Can anyone remember the name of the Pub / Club opened in the 1960s by Peter and Rodney Fairburn on Hunslet Road I think it had been some Rugby club. it was very good for a while but as I have moved away have no idea what it became. this quite modern looking building had a steep car park behind.

Are you sure you are talking Hunslet Road because I can't imagine there being a steep car park in the vicinity. There are only gentle slopes to the south and it would have to be a mound/ridge to the north given the proximity of the river.

Also give us a clue as to the whereabouts especially if you do mean Hunslet Road because I regard that to run a couple of miles from Meadow Lane to Thwaite Gate even if the map makers disagree

*Church Street is the nearest junction to where the name changes it appears to be somewhere after Joseph Street but before here.

I hear there's one called 'The New George' opening shortly on Kirkstall road.

It was on Low Road on the site of the Hunslet Nelson CC , it opened in the mid 80's

Thanks for the reply's Lads, The Trafalger Club name does ring a bell but as I remember it the site was on Hunslet Road somewhere town side before the Traffic Lightr where the Wellington Pub stood. would say that it was late 60s rather than 80s. It certainly had a steep car park behind that one entered and left by and the club itself was on two floors with the main concert room on the lower.
