Hats Off wrote: fevlad wrote: Drakes is number one for mineKirby's used to be decent, but they changed hands a while back and I'm not sure what they're like. Is that Drakes on Potternewton Lane ? Personally I think the best chippy in LS7 is Nash's at Chapel Allerton, different class to all the rest & they still have that nice little licensed restaurant upstairs. I think Drakes takes some beating. My faves in Leeds are Drakes, the Art Deco one on Roundhay Road, and Bretts in Headingley. I agree with Fevlad that Bryans is a bit over-rated - however Beer Ritz opposite isn't

We used to have two chippies on the Hawksworth estate near where I lived one was on Vesper Road just down from Vesper Way, and the other was on Lea Farm Road near the old Whitakers Quarry, also there was what we called Holmes chippie that I think was run by ex Leeds RL player John Holmes folks but I am not 100% sure of that, I think it is now the Jade Unicorn Chinese Take Away. Also just over the road there was another chippie but cant remember the name, it became a sandwich shop and is now yes you guessed it flats!!!!!The cheap Pizza shops are now putting a lot of these old chippies out of business and most chippies I know don't stay open beyond 9pm!!!
Short in arm and long in pocket, been a long time but I am making a re-appearance!!!!

That was the best chippie in Leeds, nay the world! In the 60's it was run by Brian Kerr and his wife. His car was an old Standard 8. When I returned to Leeds recently I was gutted to see it had gone.... the chippie that is, not the car!

Trojan never mentioned Up the Steps on Wide lane Morley, now a ChineseHaigh's on corner of Armley Ridge Rd/ Town St, he also had a F/C shop through the streets in the Paisleys which his wife ran. Strawberry Lane F/SMickley St F/SMiddle Cross St F/SThe problem is that there is no competition like there used to be years ago, when you had a chippie on nearly every other corner. It was a relatively cheap meal,me mam used to get us four kids Twice and cut fish in half and split the bags of chips and we got plenty.8d & 4d for once wi scraps, salt 'n' vinegar, 4 slices a bread wi real Butter each.Chips were Brown and soft on the inside, Butter used to melt as you were scoffing em.Fish were beautiful pieces of Cod or Haddock done to perfection with crunchy batter (made on the premises to special recipes) Scraps were a meal themselves. When was the last time you had F/C and the Vinegar sizzled when you put it on and the aroma and hot vinegar used to make your eyes watter? Now you get White chips...What's that all about?Batter soggyFish inside(whatever it is ) wet through and pale looking.Have they never heard of Beef Dripping?4 shilling = 20pence to feed 6 of us£2.40 for fish and £1.10 for chips yesterday = £21.00 for 6 of uscos you can't cut small fish in half and you chuck most of the chips cos they are just bits that break your ruddy teeth.I obviously didn't get 6 times cos kids are not at home but it makes you think doesn't it......Rant over.....

It was cheap but the portions were small.Chippies in Morley that are now Chinese: Middleton Road: Jt Middleton Road and Wide Lane: Britannia Road (formerly Frying Pan): Fountain Street (opp Cross Hall School): Fountain Street (formerly "In and Out"): Peel Street. That's leaving out all the other Chinese places. Who eats all this Chinese food?

We had fish and chips at Rick Stein's chippie in Padstow the other week - just take away - they were very nice (no nicer than Leeds best) but they cost £6 ea! We're used to paying £3.50 at Ingle Avenue Morley (excellent quality) I believe that Chris Old the former Yorkshire cricketer has a chippie in Cornwall selling Yorkshire Fish and Chips.
