There was a picture house at the end of Bridge Road, just before its junction with Nineveh Road, showing films until the fifties at least. Is this the one you were thinking of Tilly?

My mind must be playing tricks has snowman says i thought the Volunteer was at the very end of Water Lane not opposite the piano repair place There was a picture house i think it was next door if not it was very near cant remember the name but i have been there e few times.

what a good looking building the volunteer was,thanks for the link tyke bhoy it brought back memories,in the1960s they had a good trade in b&b for lorry drivers.

Yes it shows the roof of the "Gainy" to the right of the picture on Domestic Street and the Volunteer was certainly on the end of Water Lane and Domestic Street with the Bank on the opposite corner (Midland maybe)

Beg to differ on the Volunteer being at the end of Water Lane. Water Lane forms a T junction with Bridge Street which continues westwatds as Holbeck Lane. The image in this link and the Leodis picture of the Volunteer I posted before are at the junction of Holbeck Lane and the bottom end of Domestic Street. I don't think Holbeck Lane used to be Water Lane and Leodis doesn't indicate it either but we could be wrong.

Yup Holbeck Lane it was and the bank is also correct , I used to use it and the post office that was next door prior to demolition.

Quite correct, my apologies, though I spent much of my recreation time down there for whatever reason I used to forget that stretch being Holbeck Lane. apart from going across over to the George the Fourth, the Alexandre and the Smiths Arms if you turned right towards Whitehall Road there was the Barleycorn and the Skew Bridge. No thirsts in that area.

That's correct, here is the 1888/90 map of Holbeck showing that junction

Hi buffaloskinner You are right i also got it wrong the pub had stained glass windows every one had a man in uniform. Every one was different.i wonder what happened to them i bet they would be worth quite a lot of money now.

Looking at some information about The White House pub in Lady Pit Lane Beeston although I know it was a Melbourne house originally but I am sure that it was a Tetley's house in the 1950s although the takeover was not until 1960. am I confused or what ?? Help........
