Updates and appendices!lots of new info for most of the town centre pubs - there are now just 2 pubs in the centre I am unsure of the whereabouts of - both on Kirkgate. the Green Man whch appears in directories from 1822 to 1867 and the Grey Horse which appears from 1822 to 1837. one of these may possibly be the 'Whitakers'
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

Appendix BThe Wharfedale 27 BoroughgateAccording to E . Brumfitt's History of Otley 1974 this inn was previously the 'Carpenter's Arms'( it appears in Robinson's directory 1901 as the 'Wharfedale') and was demolished c 1935/36. photo shows site - I estimate it would have been at the right side of junction, where 'Dales' cafe is. although roads are probably wider than originally.

Appendix C The Wheatsheaf13 Boroughgate. Now Mounsey's newsagents.First appears in Baines as the 'Barley Sheaf' and continues under this name until Pigot in 1841. White in 1843 lists it as the 'Wheat Sheaf' and it continues under this name (Wheat Sheaf or Wheatsheaf) throughout 19th century. Evidence from O.S. maps reveals a closure date in the 1920s.

This research is just fabulous Drapesey - I can't believe that I worked in Otley and lived near to it for so long and yet I knew nothing of these places , although totally familiar with all four sites of course - good work indeed, and much appreciated.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

It is six months since I started this thread - which frankly have been a disaster for pubs in Otley. The battle to save the Summercross has, sadly been lost - and four pubs have subsequently closed - all fine historic pubs - The Spite, The Woolpack, the Fleece and the Black Horse. One alone would be a great loss - four is bloody ridiculous. The Black Horse closure is particularly worrying - this magnificent late Victorian building should be listed/preserved urgently.None of the pubs have the metal shutters up yet, so perhaps there is some hope. [update 2010 - all but the Woolpack have reopened but futures uncertain ]
