A fascinating thread - it has been mentioned on the lost pubs thread - but this brings it all together .I remember seeing the building in the mis 80s. you could still make out the 'Union Cross' name in the 'frame' between the upper windows.. I believe it originally had its own brewery (and chimney) - but this must have been before Whitakers (of Halifax) took it over. Comparing the 70's picture (second down) it looks like the 'whitaker's celebrated ales' sign has been replaced by one saying 'Union Cross Inn' (although 'Leodis' don't think so!!)- but it looks to me like there's something before the word 'Union'. can't make it out - possibly an owner's name???
