There's a piece about the old pubs here http://www.leedstoday.net/ViewArticle.a ... eID=172684 It might evoke a bit of nostalgia

I remember the Star and Garter being open Phill. It must have closed around the late 1980's. It was then a 'Storeys' amusement arcade for some time but now seems to be boarded up. I only think I ever had one pint in it - don't worry you didn't miss much! it was a typical grotty market pub (like the Old Royal Oak, if you know what Imean). One thing I do remember is that it was a Sam Smith's pub, rare in the city centre, as was the Duncan - which was next door but one (or two? - there was certainly a barbers in between) - There was a large sign high up on the building (neon perhaps) that stretched between the two and said " Star & Garter -----Sam Smiths Tadcaster Ales------The Duncan"
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

What was that awful pub near where the "heath robinson bike" used to be ?Also what was Chaplins called before it was Chaplins? I seem to remember a pub with a scottish name, I always thought it was the Tam O'shanter but I know realise I was wrong.Any memories of the Bali Hai, surely the classiest place in town, or sixth form parties at Belindas, some firetrap on lower Briggate !

The crown hotel opposite tetley's brewery reopened briefly about a year ago as a squat that hosted some amazing gigs and parties. Tetley's owned the place so it didn't last long. Anybody ever drink in there when it was still a 'real' pub?Not strictly city centre mind. Nor was stoagies [?] that turned into caspers, now demolished, what about that place? I always gave it a miss cos i heard someone got stabbed in the eye there. And whilst i am moving towards the little woodhouse/hyde park area of leeds it has to be worth mentioning the newlands, burnt out and demolished after the police used it as a surveillence spot that sparked the 'hyde park riots' - 1995 i think. Further down the hill from there was another dodgy boozer, the little park, that place shut down and turned into student flats not long after a drugs bust that turned up herion and fire arms. I don't think i mind that i missed out on a pint in any of the above 3 or am i buying into the hype?

Between being adam and eves and the hi-fi club it was called scrumpies, an absolute hole but a great place. It was punk/metal/goth kind of place that had a club on a saturday afternoon that cost 50p to get in. Anyone else frequent there? Oh it was called liquid after that too but it had lost it's charm by that point. I have heard that sonic youth and the butthole surfers played there at some points in the 80's. Wish i'd seen that.

Not sure if it was the same pub as Chaplins but I think there was a pub called the Highlander in The Merrion. I think it was the one at the other end which came something like Jug and bottle.
