By coincidence I had to write a few sentences about my childhood recollections of Bonfire Night in Leeds for a German conversation class I attend. This article was quite a useful reminder about the run up to bonfire night.

One thing I think she doesn't mention was the actual burning of the Guy Fawkes effigy on the fire.
We always used to make a guy by stuffing old clothes and for a few weeks would collect a "penny for the guy " standing outside local shops with the dummy or going door to door. We would spend the money on fireworks. One year we didn't have a guy so we dressed up a small lad to look like a guy and collected pennies just the same. :)
