SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

Some time ago I posted about Redwood trees in Leeds. I love these trees and have found a few around the city. They are fairly rare and well worth seeing - after all, they grow higher than any other tree, live for thousands of years and can be thicker around the base than your living room. As a redwood lover, 2-3 years ago I planted seeds and managed to grow a nice specimen, currently around 5' 8" tall (growing rapidly)in a square pot in my garden. I knew it would never be for keeps, I can hardly grow a forest giant in the small garden of a terraced house in Leeds. So, I need a home for it. I do no want any payment, all I want is to know the tree will be planted out, given the space it needs and left to thrive somewhere. Can anyone please help with this?

Plant it wild maybe? Somewhere local to you where you can see it grow still?

Perhaps the Parks and Open Spaces Dept. of LCC will look after it.

I'm waiting to hear from someone I know in the forestry section of LCC.

I've been told that .."as these trees are some of the biggest in the world, they can only be planted in forests or the grounds of stately homes. It would be a big no no to plant one randomly. it's unlikely that the council would want it but you could always email them from the LCC website. If not you could try the forestry commission." So sorry, it could be worth an email to LCC but the forestry commission could be your best bet.

You have my permission to plant it in Gledhow Valley woods It would be a pleasure to see it, plus it already has Gledhow pine growing in there. *The land was sold to Jeremiah Dixon. During his time at Gledhow Jeremiah made considerable additions to the estate and redesigned the surrounding gardens, pleasure grounds, plantations and woods. Thanks for the advice, I will see what I can do. I had to move the tree into the back garden today as it is getting too big for the very small front garden, so with my daughter's help I wheeled it round the street on a child's scooter. Bet that was a first for Leeds...I'd love the thought of a rogue coast redwood in Gledhow valley woods, hahaha but I am sure it would be cut down before it had chance to reach 300 feet... Though that might take 1000 years...Nobody got a huge garden?Don't forget, the council already have a redwood (giant) right outside the Civic Hall. Maybe they would like another somewhere!
